What We Know About the Deaths Near the Gaza Aid ConvoyGazan authorities said that more than 100 people were killed and hundreds more injured in a chaotic scene early Thursday morning in Gaza City, where a crowd gathered around a convoy of trucks carrying desperately needed aid and the Israeli military opened fire. A small number of people may have been struck by aid trucks during the panic, and two Israeli military vehicles are also visible at the scene. The two tanks visible in the drone video were stationed on Al-Rashid around 250 meters from the base. Aid delivery has also been hampered by the breakdown of civil order as increasingly desperate civilians converge on aid convoys before the trucks can get to distribution centers.

2024 Begins With More Record Heat Worldwide
  + stars: | 2024-02-07 | by ( Raymond Zhong | Elena Shao | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
It was the hottest January on record for the oceans, too, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Sea surface temperatures were just slightly lower than in August 2023, the oceans’ warmest month on the books. And sea temperatures kept on climbing in the first few days of February, surpassing the daily records set last August. The oceans absorb the great majority of the extra heat that greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap near Earth’s surface, making them a reliable gauge of how much and how quickly we are warming the planet. Warmer oceans provide more fuel for hurricanes and atmospheric river storms and can disrupt marine life.

Citizens of Thailand, the Philippines and Russia, who were freed through separate talks, also numbered among the hostages Hamas released. The New York Times compared the Israeli data with lists of the Palestinians released each day by the Palestinian Authority’s Commission for Prisoners’ Affairs. The Israeli data shows that three-quarters of the released Palestinians had not been convicted of a crime. More than half of the cases were being prosecuted in Israeli military courts, which try Palestinians in the occupied West Bank but not Israeli settlers who live there. Nearly all Palestinians tried in Israeli military courts are convicted, and those accused of security offenses can be imprisoned indefinitely without charge or trial.

Seventeen Thais, one Filipino and one Russian-Israeli dual citizen were also released through separate negotiations. Four other hostages were released before the cease-fire. Execs at a healthcare conference debated whether employers should pay for workers' weight-loss drugs. A Blackstone exec warned that the costly GLP-1 drugs could put some employers out of business. Panelists agreed that companies covering the drugs should do so as part of a broader support program. Andreas Mang, the CEO of Equity Healthcare, a division of Blackstone, said spending on these diabetes and weight-loss drugs, known as GLP-1 agonists, spiked 600% across Blackstone's portfolio in the last four years. The benefits firm Aon recently projected that employers' health-insurance costs will climb 8.5% next year, fueled in part by weight-loss drugs.
